Review: Screams of a Winter Night (1979)

Image
1979's  Screams of a Winter Night is now on Blu-ray courtesy of Code Red and offers an opportunity to see not only the original theatrical version that played in drive-in-cinemas and theaters almost forty years ago, but also to see a newly-restored, longer cut of the film that was believed to have been lost. The never-before-seen version of the movie runs nearly two hours (not 124 minutes, as the package proclaims) and adds over a half-hour back to the film's running time. Depending on your tolerance for low-budget seventies horror, this is either a good thing or a bad thing.

The Colossus of Rhodes: Sergio Leone's Unsung Epic

Image
Years before Italian film icon Sergio Leone made history with his spaghetti western classics like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West, he cut his teeth in the "peplum" genre. Peplum films were inspired by the epics of Holywood's Golden Age, but NO ONE made movies like the ones coming out of Italy during the fifties and early sixties. Leone's first film, The Colossus of Rhodes, is an exceptional entry-point for those looking to learn more about this unsung genre and the giants who worked within it, and this video explains why!

"Q" and A with Star Trek Comics Writer Scott Tipton

Image
Writer Scott Tipton has been blazing new trails with IDW's Star Trek comics for over a decade, penning titles like Klingons: Blood Will Tell  and the  Mirror Broken  series, as well as crossing over the heroes of the Federation with other fan-favorite properties such as Planet of the Apes and Doctor Who . Scott and his co-writer and brother David Tipton have now launched perhaps their most ambitious project yet: in The Q Conflict , four Federation crews--those of The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager -- are brought together for the first time to face their most powerful threat yet. Cereal At Midnight had the pleasure to chat with Scott about this new comic, creative inspirations and mentors, and the responsibility of carrying on Gene Rodenberry's dream.

Review: Horror of Dracula from Warner Archive

Image
There's no other studio quite like Hammer. Often imitated, never duplicated, Hammer dominated genre films from the late fifties all the way through the seventies with a unique English style and a stable of regular actors who would become household names to monster kids of multiple generations. They breathed new life (and fresh blood) into monster movies that had become relatively tame, and by putting their own decidedly-adult spin on the classics, they presented old favorites like Frankenstein, The Mummy, and yes, Dracula himself, in a way that not only felt fresh, but more explicitly scary than arguably ever before.

Horror Express is now out on Blu-ray from Arrow Video and Cereal At Midnight has your review! This cult classic film defies genres and walks among several of them: horror, science fiction, mystery, and action. With a killer (no pun intended) cast including Hammer Films stalwarts Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, not to mention Kojack himself, Telly Savalas, Horror Express is endlessly watchable and--most importantly--a ton of fun.
