Review: The Warriors (1979)

Image
Is The Warriors  an under-appreciated gem? This 1979 genre-bender from Walter Hill came along at the same time as  Mad Max  and outright predates the post-apocalyptic cycle of the 1980s. And yet it doesn't seem to enjoy the same cultural cache as some of its spiritual brethren. Sure, every movie geek worth his salt has uttered those immortal lines "Warriors...come out to play-ee-aay!" But the movie still feels more like a cult favorite than a widely-regarded classic. Maybe that's why we love it so much.  For those that have not yet discovered this magical mystery tour of Inner City New York by way of a nightmare near-future: Manhattan is overrun by a myriad of street gangs, each one more colorful than the last. You've got The Turnbull AC's, The Baseball Furies, The Orphans, The Lizzies, The Punks, The Electric Eliminators, The Gramercy Riffs, The Rogues, and of course, The Warriors, among many others. Each gang has their own territory that they can't ventu...

Review: Love Slaves of the Amazons (1957)

Image
From Curt Siodmak, the man behind the screenplays of many 1940s Universal monster movies ( The Invisible Man Returns and  The Wolf Man, to name just two) comes this spectacularly-silly jungle picture that feels as if it's been ripped from the pulpy pages of a men's adventure magazine. From the very first frames of the film when we meet a jungle girl (Brazilian actress/singer Yara Lex in her debut) painted in green as she looks at the viewer and sings wordless soprano notes over a menacing score, we know what we're in for: this is the world of exotica , where danger and beauty and intrigue coexist. It's a Martin Denny album come to life. The ritual of the savage awaits! The plot, thin though it may be, concerns an expedition into the far reaches of the Amazon in search of a secret tribe of mighty women who are told to guard untold riches in gold and jewels. One man, the aged and alcoholic Dr. Crespi (Eduardo Ciannelli), has seen the women and touched their treasures, bu...

Review: Clifford (1994)

Image
Clifford is the kind of movie that I can't believe exists. It's so strange and, frankly, so uncommercial, that the fact that it was made in the first place defies all odds and expectations. Upon further digging, it's a film that sat on a shelf for three years, endured extensive reshoots, and that the screenwriters were so embarrassed by that they used a pseudonym. Does that make it a bad movie? Not really. In fact, as I write this, I'm coming to the realization that I'm a fan. But I also have to admit that my interest in the movie mostly comes from how overtly weird it is.  This 1994 oddity stars Martin Short, who was 37 years old in 1990 when the production began and in his 40s by the time it actually hit screens. Short plays the title character, a 10-year-old boy who loves mischief and dinosaurs and who causes havoc whenever he doesn't get his way, which is most of the time. Clifford's singular goal is to go to Dinosaur World, a fictional Los Angeles theme...

Review: The Beatles and India (2021)

Image
During their brief-but-prolific career as a band, The Beatles not only shaped the direction of popular music, they also had a profound impact on art, fashion, drug culture, and even spirituality. Beginning with George Harrison's newfound interest with Indian music in 1965 and culminating a few years later along the road to Rishikesh, The Beatles were instrumental in sparking curiosity in meditation and Eastern philosophy. The story of their spiritual quest has been endlessly chronicled over the decades, but never quite as thoroughly as in The Beatles and India , a new documentary that looks at this often-studied time in the history of the band from a decidedly Indian perspective.  The Beatles and India  is directed by Ajoy Bose and Peter Compton, with Bose adapting his 2018 book Across the Universe: The Beatles in India  for the screen. It shouldn't come as a surprise that the film features no music from The Beatles, but the Fab Four are well represented through archival ...

Review: One-Armed Boxer (1972)

Image
Roughly two years after breaking new ground for the Shaw Brothers with 1970's The Chinese Boxer , Jimmy Wang Yu continued to innovate the fledgeling kung fu movie genre with one hand tied behind is back, but this time it was for Shaw's biggest competition! During the 1960s, Jimmy Wang Yu was a star on the rise. He'd been discovered by the iconic filmmaker Chang Cheh, who helped the former swimmer and athlete carve out a niche as a film star and a box office draw in a variety of roles, including The One-Armed Swordsman and its sequel. This culminated in 1970 with the arrival of The Chinese Boxer , which Wang Yu wrote, starred in, and directed at Shaw. The Chinese Boxer was a massive success and heralded the arrival of a superstar, but the Shaw Brothers saw things another way. When he couldn't even get a pay raise, Wang Yu sued the studio and left for Golden Harvest, a rival company that had just been launched by Raymond Chow, one of Shaw's former executives. It's...

Review: Wild Things (1998)

Image
I'm not sure if Wild Things  is as clever as it thinks it is, but it sure is fun. This trash masterpiece from the late 1990s feels like a Cinemax movie that's been given millions of dollars and the best resources that Hollywood can buy. Deliberately campy and full of more twists and turns than an attraction at a Florida water park, this neo-noir serves up backstabbing, deception, and eroticism with a candy coating that distracts from a convoluted plot that requires "deleted" scenes during the end credits so we can actually make sense of what we've just seen. Not that anyone minds, since they movie delivers what it promises on the poster.  This is something of an ensemble piece, with newcomer Denise Richards as our main attraction, 80s hearthrobs Matt Dillon and Kevin Bacon, post- Scream Neve Campbell (who seems out of her depth in such tawdry waters), and Bill Murray all sharing the screen. Of course, the main talking point with Wild Things  is the nudity, both fr...
