Review: Underwater! (1955)

Image
“Skin Diver Action! Jane Russell As you’ve never seen her before!” So declares the poster for 1955’s Underwater! , an adventure movie centered around the perils of deep-sea treasure hunters and the dangerous world they inhabit. And what a world it is! Our two intrepid leads spend their time navigating their boats into the waters where ships sank hundreds of years ago in hopes that they’ll be able to dive deep beneath the ocean surface, uncovering gold and riches untold among the wreckage of the past. This means they’re constantly contending with not only the dangers of the deep sea--including sharks, lack of oxygen, or becoming pinned beneath a piece of debris--but also the human threat of pirates and scavengers. Oh, and let’s not forget dynamite. Miles from the coast, it would seem that threats are everywhere.

The Creature Columns: Kill List (2011): A Movie Review by Tom "Creature" Jeffers

Image
When I first heard of the movie  Kill List , I was curious as to what it was about. Many sites had labeled it Lovecraftian in nature. Boasts of a shocking ending were plentiful. I decided to seek out this film and view it. I almost ordered it several times online from various outlets, but for some reason, I didn’t. I was patient, and like so many times, that was rewarded. Imagine my surprise when I found this film at my local Dollar Tree. I grabbed the single copy they had and excitedly headed home. Within the next few days, I watched the movie and knew that I was going to review it for Cereal at Midnight. The reasons for this are many, but suffice it to say that this film falls into the category of unique horror. I will be careful to not spoil it in this review so read freely.

Review: The World, The Flesh and The Devil (1959)

Image
One of the many joys of discussing and reviewing pop culture through Cereal At Midnight lies in the simple aspect of discovery. I make the argument as often as I can that we're living in a golden age for cinema preservation; so much of our entertainment past is now at our fingertips, and in quality that blows away every previous release. With this unprecedented access comes the thrill of discovery, especially those pieces of work that might have fallen under the radar in the years and decades since their first appearance. Prior to screening 1959's The World, The Flesh and The Devil  via Warner Archive's fantastic new Blu-ray, the movie could not have been further off my radar. I honestly am not sure I'd even heard of it before. But through the discovery of the movie comes the joy of finding something that I've connected with and am so happy to have experienced. On the surface, The World, The Flesh and The Devil  would make a perfect double billing with The Las

Review: The Set-Up (1949)

Image
Some thirteen years after making a DVD debut as part of Warner's "Film Noir Collection Vol. 1," The Set-Up makes a triumphant appearance on Blu-ray thanks to Warner Archive. The film is a seminal work of crime/noir, and its influence can be seen in dozens of movies and television specials that came after it. Each of these ripples in the pop culture waters testifies to the power of the 1949 crime film masterpiece. One of the most powerful homages comes from none other than Quentin Tarantino himself, who pays his respects to the film with the entire segment of Pulp Fiction  that deals with Bruce Willis' defiant boxer, Butch. Granted, Tarantino's tale seems to offer a tangential "what if" riff on the famous film, but the influence--and thus respect--is impossible to deny.

The Creature Columns: Jean M. Auel's The Earth's Children Series by Tom "Creature" Jeffers

Image
In 1980, a book by the name of The Clan of the Cave Bear emerged onto the scene. I did not read it. As the years passed, I heard people talk about this series as further books were released. Then in 1986, a movie starring Daryl Hannah was released. I remember watching that film with friends because we all were entranced by Ms. Hannah at the time. I would have been 16-17 years old and had realized that I was forever a part of “geek” culture. I loved the depiction of prehistoric times and the epic nature of the film. The movie was considered a flop at the box office, and no others have been made. However, this movie would pave the way for almost all serious prehistoric films we have enjoyed over the years. Films like Alpha (2018), that is an absolute joy despite its mediocre rating, owe a great deal to The Clan of the Cave Bear .
