Review: Bloodletting (1997)

Image
You couldn't throw a severed ear in the mid-to-late 1990s without hitting a movie that bore the influence of Tarantino. It was a new Hollywood that courted extreme violence and the glorification of the bad guy, and the impact of this bold tonal shift in the industry was felt from the largest studios to aspiring new creators who were just emerging onto the scene. Young filmmakers were given unprecedented opportunities, and a new generation of genre geeks who had been raised in the video store reached for their consumer grade camera and sought to make their own movie magic. That sets the stage for Bloodletting , a 1997 micro-budget tale of serial killers and romance that very much bears the fingerprints of QT. When an attractive redhead named Serena (Ariauna Albright) shows up at the front door of what appears to be an average twenty-something suburbanite (James L. Edwards), all is not as it seems. After a brief game of cat and mouse, we learn that this everyman is really Butch Harlo...

Review: Deadly Games (1982)

Image
When is a slasher film more than just a slasher film? Such a question applies to 1982's Deadly Games , originally created under the title Who Fell Asleep . The overall tropes of the horror sub-genre are here: a masked killer who dresses all in black and who often murders his victims in creative and gruesome ways, a cast of attractive women/victims who have trouble keeping their clothes on, even a Final Girl that the audience can clearly champion as she faces off against her stalker.  But Deadly Games complicates things by introducing more mature elements that are harder to categorize, making this anything but routine. Instead of teenagers, we have an older cast of adults--some of whom are married. There's still sex and drama, but these issues play out in a very different way than slasher movies that deal primarily with young people who sneak away from the group for a quick tumble in the back of dad's Buick. The characters here are bored by a stagnant life in a a small town ...

Review: Shocking Shorts (2022)

Image
Are filmmakers born or created? A new Blu-ray release collecting the early short films of J.R. Bookwalter provides strong evidence for the former. Shocking Shorts spans roughly a decade in the life of the wunderkind writer/producer/director/musician, presenting newly-2K-scanned Super-8mm footage that chronicles his earliest home creations. The sum of these films when viewed together--especially with Bookwalter's new audio commentary--is greater than the individual parts. Viewed separately, the shorts are the fun experiments of a boy who loves movies; but as a whole, they offer something far more valuable: a fly-on-the-wall look at the evolution of the creative process. The earliest shorts were filmed in 1978 when Bookwalter was around 12 years old. Even here, the ambition is evident as he brings his  Star Wars action figures to life with rudimentary (but impressive) stop-motion animation. Another early offering, a homemade take on The Incredible Shrinking Man , showcases the ...

Review: Santo vs. the Riders of Terror (1970)

Image
In his previous adventures, Santo has faced vampires, monsters, and mad scientists. In 1970's  Santo vs. the Riders of Terror , our silver-masked hero leaves the dark graveyards and supernatural shenanigans behind to square off against a group of outlaw bandits in the old west! One of the great things about the Santo movies--and Mexican storytelling in general--is the prevalence of magic realism, which allows for extraordinary elements in conventional settings. With magic realism, the unreal exists alongside the mundane, meaning that anything is possible. Therefore we have a Santo movie in which the character exists entirely in the old west. He doesn't time travel  to the old west like we've seen in previous movies; in this outing, he's already there. One part  The Lone Ranger and one part  Zorro , the western version of Santo rides a white horse and travels the countryside helping those who need his services. Who was that masked man? Santo! In Santo vs. the Rid...

Review: Monster from Green Hell (1957)

Image
In his essay that's included with the new Blu-ray for 1957's Monster from Green Hell , Don Stradley asks "Would the hardworking souls who made B movies back in the 1950s believe we'd still be discussing their work 70 years later?" It's a reasonable question: these movies were made on the cheap and were never intended to be anything more than disposable entertainment, created for quick thrills and the hopes of making a couple of bucks so the filmmakers could do it again. But something happened that these entrepreneurs never could have predicted: we fell in love with their movies. We didn't fall in love with them because they were slick and polished, we fell in love with them because they were rough and raw. They featured actors that didn't feel like gleaming stars of Tinsel Town, but real people. The films offer unabashed spectacle, or the dime-store equivalent thereof. We love these movies because we can see the fingerprints of the creators who made t...

Review: The Batman (2022)

Image
Every generation gets a Batman. The Caped Crusader is incredibly flexible, able to morph into whatever the times need him to be. Sometimes that's a noir-stained avenger, other times a colorful camp icon. In the 1990s, his films became synonymous with blockbuster bloat. Under the creative hand of Christopher Nolan, he became a soldier in the war against terror and a hero for the post-9/11 era. Now, a decade after Nolan's landmark trilogy and its unprecedented realism, The Dark Knight returns once again in Matt Reeves' The Batman, the most political film in the lifespan of this character.  What is The Batman about? Pain and anger. That's what drives this Batman (Robert Pattinson). That's also what drives The Riddler (Paul Dano), as well as  Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), who has lost someone dear to her. Batman is so consumed with it that the black costume that he garbs himself in is not to strike fear into the hearts of criminals, but rather serves as a manifestation of ...
