Cereal At Midnight

  I would love to say that Old Shatterhand (1964), the first movie included in Eureka's Karl May at CCC box set, is a classic. For me, it falls in line with most other Euro Westerns in having beautiful cinematography and good characters, but not a lot for those characters to do.  Old Shatterhand slightly predates Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars by about six months. As such, it lacks all of the pop opera sensibilities that would very soon come to dominate the Euro Western format. Instead, this film seems to be chasing big Hollywood spectacle in the tradition of earlier 1960s westerns like The Magnificent Seven , with widescreen vistas and an emotional orchestral score.  The problem is that the characters don't really have anything to do. Trying to summarize what the movie is actually about is a challenge. It follows the relationship between a German traveler who has befriended an Indian Chief, Winnetou, in the American West. The Unholy Trinity has a lot going for it. First, there's Pierce Brosnan, who has matured into a character actor that consistently delivers some of the most interesting work of his entire career. Then there's Samuel L. Jackson, who seems visibly delighted to be in another western. Even David Arquette, no stranger to westerns himself, provides an interesting and unconventional performance. The natural majesty of Montana, with its snow-capped mountains and wide-open vistas, is a perfect setting for a tale of revenge and greed, with the seasonal backdrop of winter providing visual distinction from the many dusty oaters that take place in arid deserts and harkening back to such classics as Robert Altman's McCabe and Mrs. Miller .  Unfortunately--and it pains me to write this-- The Unholy Trinity simply doesn't work. From director Fred F. Sears , frequent collaborator of Sam Katzman and a B-movie maverick who literally worked himself to death at the age of 44, Wyoming Renegades tries hard to rise above the traditional low budget fare. After all, this film was made in 1955: Poverty Row was becoming a thing of the past, soon to be replaced by television. Gunsmoke had been a radio staple, but in September of 1955 it would be beamed into the homes of every TV owner in America. It wasn't just Gunsmoke , either; mid-fifties families could stay home and watch The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill Jr., Death Valley Days, Gene Autry , Roy Rogers, Judge Roy Bean, The Lone Ranger. ..well, you get the picture, and that's not even all of the westerns playing on television in 1955.
