Review: Checkered Flag or Crash (1977)

Image
The poster AND trailer for Checkered Flag or Crash proudly announces it as "The First Movie About Off-Road Racing!" Hailing from the glory days of the seventies redneck revolution that catapulted CB and trucksploitation movies like Smokey and the Bandit, White Line Fever, High-Ballin', and  The Great Smokey Roadblock onto screens and into the hearts of millions of gasoline-thirsty road dogs, Checkered Flag or Crash  serves up 95 minutes of high speed thrills and a veritable demolition derby of destruction.  Cutting through the layers of exhaust fumes and mud splatter reveals a pretty thin concept, made more interesting by the cast and some of the crew behind the scenes. The premise of the film finds a down-on-his-luck promoter (played by Larry Hagman from I Dream of Jeannie and Dallas ) putting together a massive race in The Philippines--The Manilla 1000: a one-thousand mile off-road competition that will see motorcycles, dune buggies, and off-road vehicle...

'70s Cinema - An In-Depth Discussion with Cinema Dave!

Image
Ah, the 1970s! There's no other decade quite like it, and the movies that came from the era are a reflection of the rapid social changes that were happening at the time. From The Godfather to Grease, from Serpico to Star Wars, it's an period of unrest, cynicism, and anger, but also of hope, excitement, and nostalgia. It's also the decade in which the blockbuster as we know it now was first born with the movie JAWS ! Please join Heath and Cinema Dave for an in-depth discussion about this tumultuous decade in film and an exploration on how so many of the movies from that reflect so many of our current social struggles. It's a mini-film school session as we dig into the classics! I Still Believe in Angels by Eric Grigs

Image
With the Mill Creek Blu-ray release of the original series that ran for five seasons and 110 episodes from 1976 - 81, we get to experience all the ass kicking and hair flipping of Charlie’s Angels in glorious high definition. Despite the network brass initially not having faith in a show with three female leads, it was a ratings juggernaut right out of the gate. America found itself in the grips of Angel fever—and at its peak in the late 70s, it was unstoppable. The appeal cut across demographics: women wanted to look like the Angels, men wanted to be with them. The hair, makeup, and fashion budget for each episode was astronomical. Critics would derogatorily describe the show as “jiggle TV”—peddling sex and style over substance. And while our Angels do spend plenty of screen time in bikinis, there was much more at play here than simply depicting beautiful women as objects—just look to the opening credits. Of course they were beautiful, but in a time when the system only saw them ...

Welcome to the Space Lounge (Space Lounge Vol. 1)

Image
Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce the Space Lounge, the hippest, swingingest corner of the galaxy where you can cozy up for a drink and check out some of the coolest music that lies far off the beaten path. If you've poked around this site, you might recognize that I'm obsessed with mid-century kitsch. From the late fifties to the early-to-mid seventies, the weirdest, hottest, strangest popular music ever was pouring out of the culture. Here in the Space Lounge, I'll be spinning lounge, exotica, surf, swing, and even unusual elevator records that are still cooler than the other side of the pillow. Expect the unexpected. Today I christen the Space Lounge and cut the cosmic ribbon to welcome you into the party. You can check your coat in the tiki closet and order a drink from the monkey in the fez. Prepare for blast off as we ride this rocket all the way back to the atomic age. Lift off after the jump...

Midnight Music: John Carpenter's Doctor Who

Image
This is not my video, but I'm posting it here because I love it and I think it deserves to be appreciated by as many people as possible. Fact #1: John Carpenter is the best. Fact #2: Doctor Who is also the best. YouTube's GeorgeCMusic decided to combine the two together and created something that is so awesome that I can hardly stand it. The marriage of seventies-era John Carpenter synthesizer with seventies era Doctor Who (think Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor) hits me right where I live. It's spooky in exactly the way that it needs to be and sounds JUST LIKE what Ron Grainer's classic Doctor Who theme would have sounded like if John Carpenter worked for the BBC Radiophonic Workshop circa 1978.

The Paul Lynde Halloween Special (1976)

Image
This is not my video, but I'm putting it here because it fits right in with what Cereal At Midnight is all about. This Halloween special aired on October 29, 1976 on the ABC network. You really have to see it to believe it. Starring the flamboyant comedian and actor Paul Lynde, who I still can't quite believe was embraced by middle-America, this special mirrors his acerbic-yet-silly tone. It also featuring appearances by Margaret Hamilton (the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz ), Tim Conway, Roz "Pinky Tuscadero" Kelly, Florence Henderson, Billy Barty, Betty White, Donny and Marie Osmond, and the rock band KISS . The seventies were nothing if not insane, and this is the proof.
