Exploitation maven Jerry Gross may be better remembered for the movies that he distributed than for the ones that he actually created. Notorious grindhouse staples such as I Spit on Your Grave , I Drink Your Blood , Fulci's Zombie , Penitentiary , The Black Godfather , and The Mafu Cage  owe their reputations largely to Gross and his entrepreneurial efforts, but as a director, his output is much smaller and more obscure. Now, his first and arguably most unknown film, 1966's  Girl on a Chain Gang, has been given wonderful new restoration by The Film Detective in collaboration with Something Weird Video.   Three young social rights activists (a white man, a white woman, and a black man) are driving through the south when a small town sheriff pulls the group over. 1988's My Stepmother is an Alien  is a very strange movie that could only have been made in the 1980s. Part lusty sex comedy, part sincere family tale, it never really figures out what it wants to be. Its greatest success, and the reason to view the movie all these years later, is for the powerhouse performance from Kim Basinger. Coming just two years after her steamy, career-making turn in 9 1/2 Weeks , this movie takes a pretty big risk on Basinger, who must not only look stunning, but also be funny. Her comedic skills were not a known quantity in 1988, but lucky for us, she's hilarious. Playing up the fish-out-of-water (or alien-out-of-space) theme perfectly, Basinger soars as an intergalactic being who must convince a physicist to share his research with her so she can save her cosmic home. Brand new on Blu-ray, Giant from the Unknown  hails from that golden age of backyard B-movies both wonderful and bizarre, the fabulous '50s! As film historian Tom Weaver notes in his excellent (and quite funny) audio commentary, there were so many low-budget monster movies made during the 1950s that the market was not merely saturated, it was actually destroyed by being over-served. Lucky for us, these films still exist and often retain every bit of the charm and imagination that can still cause curious cinema searchers to seek them out and enjoy their many wonderful qualities. This is exactly the sort of fun and fanciful mid-century genre picture that Cereal At Midnight was born to appreciate.
