There's more to Rain than meets the eye.  Joan Crawford takes center stage, buried under so much makeup that she's barely recognizable. She plays Sadie Thompson, a prostitute who has come to the South Pacific island of Pago Pago in an attempt to turn over a new leaf, find herself, and outrun her past. While there, she receives every reaction imaginable from the people that she's boarding with: the younger men want her, the women despise her, and the older men remember younger, wilder days with a drunken twinkle in their eye. But it's the local missionary, played by Walter Huston, who will impact her most. His cold piety is at odds with his human weakness. Contrary to Tina Turner's proclamation that "We Don't Need Another Hero," the success of the  Mad Max  franchise in the 1980s spurred an entire exploitation cycle of post-apocalyptic movies that saw any enterprising filmmaker with a few bucks and a willing cast and crew trekking into the wasteland to cash in on the trend while the gettin' was good.  In many ways, it was a more innocent time when audiences demanded less from their entertainment. They would suspend their disbelief for 90 minutes to watch a hero or two struggle against some gasoline despot or rajah of the ruins who terrorizes a tattered band of survivors with an iron fist, or mask...or something made of iron (scrap metal is very important in post-apocalyptic movies, after all). 2022's MEAD doesn't look like anything else because there's nothing else quite like it. Any similarities to Pixar films or the modern Marvel zeitgeist owe more to the visual influence and style of Richard Corben and the words of Jan Strnad, the two men who first created these characters and designs back in 1972 for the underground "adults only" comic book Fever Dreams .  I'm not quite sure what to make of Checkered Ninja . Hailing from Denmark, this film looks like a heartwarming kiddie movie about a stuffed ninja doll but is actually something far edgier. It's also the second Northern European film to befuddle me in as many months (the other was The Old Man: The Movie ) by combining a family-friendly tone with an adult humor that seems out of place.  The film is based on a novel by Anders Mattheson, who also co-directs the movie. Our tale begins in a Thailand sweat shop (as all the best kid's stories do) where children work their fingers to the bone making stuffed ninja plushies. When a young boy accidentally uses the checkered scarf of a visiting businessman instead of the regulation black cloth on one of the dolls, he's beaten to death. At that moment, a freak lightning bolt strikes the checkered ninja doll, giving him life and a mission of vengeance.
