Review: Chicago Confidential (1957)

Image
1957's Chicago Confidential is but one of many movies that purports to be "ripped from the headlines" and tackles (read: exploits) contemporary news trends in hopes of converting them into ticket sales. This B-movie formula ran rampant throughout the 1950s,   with Chicago Confidential just one in a string of many low-budget films that sought success on the promise of a tell-all expose. Labor racketeering is the salacious subject here, "suggested" by a 1950 book by Jack Lait and Lee Mortimer which exposed the seedy underbelly of the famous city.  Like several other B-movie noirs of the fifties, Chicago Confidential  features an authoritative, god-like narrator in an attempt to provide a sense of importance and credibility. I suspect this narration exists because the story itself cannot establish much gravitas on its own due to its low budget and by-the-numbers direction from workman director Sidney Salkow, who did much better work elsewhere ( Robber's Roost ...

Review: The Boss (1956)

Image
My first exposure to John Payne, like so many others, was through 1947's  Miracle on 34th Street, a feel-good holiday movie that finds the actor starring opposite Maureen O'Hara in a romantic, good guy role that remains a favorite of many, reportedly including Payne himself. But in the decade that was to follow, the actor would continue his career by appearing in a bevy of crime, noir, and western pictures that were about as far as you could get form the fantastical charm of his earlier successes. With titles like Kansas City Confidential, 99 River Street, and Hell's Island , Payne's career path took him down the dark side streets of cinema. 1956's  The Boss is unlike any other John Payne movie I've seen, stripping this likable actor of any charisma and affability. He plays Matt Brady, a returning war vet (that's Dubya Dubya One) who has come home from the front lines to find his brother running an empire. But Matt has a mighty temper and a taste for liquor ...

Review: Hero (1997)

Image
Power corrupts. This simple fact has been the theme of countless movies that showcase how the rise to power is so often followed by a fall from grace. Money, power, and corruption are the subjects of 1997's Hero, which is not to be confused with the 2002 Jet Li movie of the same name. The film takes place in 1897 Shanghai and chronicles the rise of Ma Wing Jing (played by Taiwanese/Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro, an actor that video game fans may recognize as the star of  Onimusha ), a determined-but-poor working-class tough guy who impresses local mob boss Tam Sei (Biao Yuen) when he refuses to back down from a fight. The standard organized crime story follows as our protagonist grows in power and influence while becoming a target for rival, hatchet-wielding gang members as he ascends the ladder to the top.  Sound familiar? Hero is a remake of Chang Cheh's 1972 epic The Boxer from Shangtung , but with an entirely different aesthetic that fundamentally changes...
