Gunsmoke: The Complete Series Headed to DVD - What This Means for Physical Media

Image
This is a big one, folks, and it holds a lot of meaning for those of us who buy, watch, and collect the movies and TV shows we love on DVD and Blu-ray. In all honesty, I never thought I would see the day when the longest-running TV western of all time (20 seasons, from 1955 until 1975) was not only completed on DVD, but was given a lavish, deluxe package. For those who might not have been following the saga of Gunsmoke  on home media, the series first saw a DVD release way back in January of 2006 when Paramount put out two 50th Anniversary box sets, each serving as "best of" compilations chronicling a ten-year chunk of the show. This was certainly to test the waters and see how well the show could sell on DVD, which was in its heyday. Season One of Gunsmoke finally came a year-and-a-half later in 2007, with every subsequent season being split into two halves and released months apart. Fans of the show could hope, at best, to add one complete season of the show to th

The Creature Columns: Duck Dodgers (2003-2005) - A TV Show Review by Tom "Creature" Jeffers

Image
I have always loved Looney Tunes . I have always been a Daffy Duck fan. Some of my earliest memories are of the hilarious cartoons my dad and I would watch with this wonderful character. The old versions are classic and beloved.  I remember being excited about Duck Dodgers way back in the day. Just imagine how happy I was to discover a new version of Warner Brothers' greatest animated science fiction hero back in 2003.  I watched this show with absolute rapture before I went to sleep many nights.  My wife was incredibly tolerant of me needing my Duck Dodgers fix before bed. Like Mr. Garibaldi of Babylon 5 , Daffy very well could be my second favorite thing in the universe.

The Creature Columns - The Pride of Baghdad: A Beautiful Response to War

Image
Vertigo publishing had several successes in the time it stood as DC Comics' mature reading choice. The imprint has since been shut down, and DC just labels its mature books. The Vertigo label was closed in January of 2020. However, it has spawned the likes of The Sandman and Y: The Last Man along with a slew of other titles. One of those titles was The Pride of Baghdad . While this tale has fictional elements, the basis of this powerful story is true. In 2003, during the invasion of Iraq, Fedayeen Saddam troops took up a defensive position around a zoo as United States forces began the Battle of Bagdad. The zookeepers abandoned their posts, and after about 8 days of fighting, many of the animals remained caged and starving. However, during this time bombs had destroyed some cages and enclosures. The animals were wandering free in the abandoned city. Among them were four lions.  The Pride of Baghdad tells their tragic story and serves as a memorial to these majestic creatures

The collection features 17 shorts and two feature films, all of which have been restored from 2K and 4K scans of the best 35 mm sources that exist worldwide. The restorations have been completed in conjunction with the UCLA Film and Television Archive. Perhaps most notably, the 1927 silent Laurel & Hardy film The Battle of the Century is making its video debut in this collection after having been lost for 90 years! In addition to the 17 shorts and two feature films, there will be eight hours of exclusive extras, including commentaries, thousands of rare photos and documents, audio and film interviews with co-workers of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, and a full restoration of the only surviving color film, The Tree in a Test Tube . The restored shorts in the collection are: Berth Marks , Brats , Hog Wild , Come Clean , One Good Turn , Helpmates , th

The Creature Columns - Koethe: Time

Image
Few games have had the power of Life is Strange . (I may review that here at some point.) However, the focus of this review is to showcase something that grew out of the game in an unexpected way. Anyone who has played Life is Strange would most likely agree that the music in the game is almost a character. It sets the atmosphere and contributes to the power of the story. However, this review is not about that music either. Confused? Please let me introduce you to an independent artist that created an entire album that was inspired by the game. Koethe is an independent artist that writes and plays music that the game Life is Strange inspired. However, this is more than just a fanboy effort. The deep folksy music that this man creates is a perfect match to the game. In many cases it surpasses the original soundtrack.
