Toys R Us: Say Goodbye, Never Forget (Farewell Tribute)

Image
When Toys R Us declared bankruptcy and announced that they were closing most of their stores, many of us found ourselves saying farewell to a living piece of our childhood. Take one last trip into the store with Cereal At Midnight and let's wander the aisles together. This video was filmed just days before the liquidation sales began, when the shelves were stocked and the "going out of business" signs had not been hung yet. If you grew up a Toys R Us kid, this is probably how you'll want to remember the "biggest toy store there is." Though we have to say goodbye, we'll never forget how it felt to visit Toys R Us when we were young. This video is a tribute--not to a corporation, but to our childhood, when the shelves seemed endless, and our imaginations knew no limits.

Scooby-Doo and Batman: The Brave and the Bold Movie Review (Scooby Doo)

Image
In this video, we talk about the new Scooby-Doo/Batman: The Brave and the Bold movie from Warner Brothers. In the grand tradition of Hanna-Barbera animation, this movie combines the best elements of the Scooby Gang with the team-up excitement of Batman: The Brave and the Bold! We'll discuss if the movie lives up to the legacy of both shows, and I'll offer some recommendations of some other animated movies from Warner Brothers that have a similar tone. Make sure your Bat Utility Belt is packed with lots of Scooby snacks!

Digital Comic Books! Plus, Are Comics In Trouble? (Marvel Unlimited, Comixology)

Image
In this video, we take a look at the "digital vs physical" debate, but this time with a focus on comics. Along the way, you'll get my honest take on digital comic book services like Marvel Unlimited and Comixology as well as my assessment of their strengths and weaknesses. Then we dive headfirst into a look at the state of the comic book industry as a whole. Is it in good shape? Is it in trouble? OMG, ARE COMICS DYING?! What you don't know could harm you! On second thought, you'll be fine. We finish the video with a look at the cost of fandom, gate-keeping (*gasp*), and the changing face of collecting. As always, this video is a little bit grumpy, a little bit funny (hopefully), but always totally honest.

DON'T BUY the Sega Genesis Flashback HD from At Games

Image
I picked one of these up today at a big box retailer and couldn't wait to get it home. I'd read the reviews and I knew the console had some issues, but I told myself that I had realistic expectations and I knew the strengths and weaknesses of the system, so I'd just appreciate it for what it was and overlook what it wasn't. Nope.

Gumby: The Movie (1995)

Image
From the "huh?" files comes Gumby: The Movie , aka The Gumby Movie , aka  Gumby 1 .  Until I saw the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack while out shopping last week, this wasn't even on my radar. Boy, I'm glad I found it.

Collecting At Midnight is geared toward the hobby (obsession) of collecting from a personal and honest perspective.

The Lady from Shanghai (1947)

Image
Sometimes great movies are made even when the people responsible for creating them seem to be doing their best to spoil the process. Such is the case with 1947's seminal film noir (a status I'll defend in a bit) The Lady from Shanghai . The behind-the-scenes drama of this wonderful film rival what eventually ended up on screen, with neither the writer/director/star Orson Welles being satisfied, nor its executive producer, Harry Cohn. Even audiences weren't all that interested in it back in 1947.  Orson Welles is famous for being a difficult entity with whom to work, and studio executives are famous for counting pennies and wanting things done their way. Those two personality traits aren't very easy bedfellows, and Welles has left behind a reputation as a man who pushed the buttons of the people that employed him. In response to the production of this movie, Harry Cohn went as far as to notoriously comment that he'd never again hire one person to write, dire...

Yor, the Hunter from the Future (1983) Blu-ray Review

Image
I can't tell you how excited I was to get the package in the mail that I knew contained my Blu-ray copy of  Yor, the Hunter from the Future. I'd never seen the movie, but as a fan of low-budget genre entertainment, I was chomping at the bit to spin the disc. The movie does not disappoint.

Why I'm Mad At Disney (Star Wars Galaxy's Edge, Marvel, Magic Kindom, EPCOT, World)

Image
This is a twenty-minute therapy session in which I explain why I'm currently a little upset at Disney as a company. We cover Disney's purchase of Fox (again), talk about the rising ticket prices of the parks at Disney World while the rides themselves continue to decline, and look to the horizon with the construction of Star Wars Land (Galaxy's Edge) and the injection of Marvel into the parks. We also look at the tenure of Bob Iger as the CEO of Disney and see how he compares to the notorious Michael Eisner. It's less angry than it sounds, and we might actually figure out a thing or two about ourselves and the way we interact with our entertainment!

Review: Star Wars: Captain Phasma from Marvel Comics

Image
The world of Star Wars  is absolutely littered with characters that are fascinating and have detailed back-stories, yet get very little screen time. It's the double-edged sword of the iconic film series: they give us an awesome world that feels lived-in and is populated by characters that feel like they've always existed, yet they don't have the time or the means to delve too deeply into the mythology of every nook and cranny. Such is the case with Captain Phasma, a character that follows in the tradition of Jango Fett, Aurra Sing, Zam Wesell, Count Dooku, Plo Koon, Kit Fisto, and all the bounty hunters we met in The Empire Strikes Back , particularly Boba Fett. The movies just don't have the ability to give each one of these interesting characters the attention they deserve. Luckily, that's exactly the kind of thing that the Expanded Universe was created to do.

In Defense of Mill Creek Entertainment

Image
Let's take an in-depth look at the company Mill Creek Entertainment, the guys behind those massive 50-movie sets that seem to be everywhere. We look at the pros and cons of the company's business model, highlight their successes, and point out a few areas that could use a little improvement. This one's for fans of exploitation, horror, sci-fi, drive-in, martial arts, and cult classic DVDs, Blu-rays, and physical media. We also look at their box sets of Miami Vice, Knight Rider, Airwolf, That '70s show, Quantum Leap, and a few of their mega-movie sets including the 200-film Drive-In Cult Classics box set.
