The opening song--written and performed by a warbling Terry Gilkyson of the folk group The Easy Riders--doesn't actually have all that much to do with the plot of the film, but it sure does set the mood. Rory Calhoun is Alec Longmire, a gunslinger who promises a dying pistolero that he'll go legit if he manages to outrun a group of murderous thugs. True to his word, Longmire finds himself in a good town with an upright sheriff (Dean Jagger) who desperately needs a deputy to help him stop a land war that has escalated into violence in the streets. Seeing his opportunity at redemption while also seeing the charms of the sheriff's feisty daughter (Martha Hyer), Longmire pins a tin star to his shirt and sets about the business of upholding the law.  This solid western comes from Univ...

The Last Posse  opens with a small, weary group of men returning to civilization after days in the desert on the trail of bank robbers who made off with a fortune. We quickly learn that not everyone who rode into the wilderness came back. The sheriff (Hollywood big man Broderick Crawford) has been shot, there's no sign of the stolen money, and nobody wants to talk about what happened. The truth emerges via a series of well-done flashback sequences that fill in the blanks. Every single time that I watch a western from the 1950s, I feel like I've enjoyed a four-course meal. This genre in this era is one of the most consistently-rewarding in all of cinema for me, featuring stories built around multi-layered characters with real and relatable human foibles, aspirations, and the kind of details that make them feel three dimensional.  Broderick Crawford delivers a stellar performance as an alcoholic lawman that's so frequently in his cups that he can barely stand on his feet, let...

1958's Apache Territory  exhibits everything that I love about the western genre at its mid-century pinnacle. Rory Calhoun plays a drifter who wanders into the titular Apache territory, a highly-dangerous land where outsiders are quickly attacked and killed by the warrior tribe that inhabits the area. Within minutes, Calhoun has spoiled an Apache raid on one group of travelers, yet arrived too late to stop another attack, which left behind a young female survivor. With certain death closing in on all sides, Calhoun finds a box canyon that has a small water supply and enough protection for a temporary refuge. It doesn't take long for a host of other desperate characters--including an old flame--to descend upon the same defensible post. With the gang in place, time is running out; if the Apaches don't get them, their dwindling resources and cabin fever will.  Quite a few themes are packed into this short feature.
