There's no denying that 1938's Angels with Dirty Faces  is a masterpiece. The iconic gangster film stars James Cagney, who had helped create the genre in 1931 with The Public Enemy , Pat O'Brien--no stranger to mobster pictures himself--and Humphrey Bogart, who had been playing gun-toting bad guys as long as Cagney, but had been further down the call sheet. All three actors are synonymous with Warner Bros. and mob movies, with Cagney and O'Brien being a part of the "Irish Mafia" in Hollywood during the 1930s. The pedigree of talent on the stage couldn't be higher, and the movie has become one of the most beloved films in the gangster cycle, even being parodied in Home Alone   by the fake movie Angels with Filthy Souls . "Keep the change, ya filthy animal!" The story of Angels with Dirty Faces tells the tale of two poor kids, Rocky and Jerry, who grew up on the mean streets, struggling to survive. One particularly mischievous night finds the boys...

Robert Altman's 1973 Neo Noir film The Long Goodbye  is hard to pin down. It's a detective movie that takes place 15 years after the classic film noir cycle had ended, depicting a character out of time, sleepwalking through a world that is not his own. The plot is opaque, and there are details to the story that aren't made known to the audience, even when the final credits have rolled. It's both a commentary on the Golden Age of Hollywood and a criticism of artifice. Is anything real? Elliott Gould (2001's  Ocean's Eleven ) stars as Philip Marlowe, a private detective first created on the page by hardboiled author Raymond Chandler and embodied in film and television by Humphrey Bogart ( The Big Sleep ), Dick Powell ( Murder, My Sweet ), Robert Montgomery ( Lady in the Lake ), Robert Mitchum ( Farewell My Lovely ), James Garner, and Powers Booth (TV's Marlowe and Philip Marlowe: Private Eye , respectively). In the capable hands of Gould, Marlowe goes from con...

Bogey stars in this crime/noir film about a man doing his best to survive when all the world seems determined to grind him into the dirt.  Tokyo Joe  taps into the post-war frustrations that are synonymous with film noir. In the movie, Humphrey Bogart plays Joe Barrett, a former American Air Force colonel who has returned to Tokyo three years after World War II in hopes of running his old nightclub, Tokyo Joe's. There he discovers that his bar is now being watched over by his friend Ito (Teru Shimada, You Only Live Twice ) and that the wife (played by Florence Marly) he thought was dead is not only still alive, but has married someone else in his absence. To complicate things even further, an opportunity to smuggle goods on his freighter plane makes it seem as if crime is the only way to survive. With the odds stacked against him, Joe finds himself pushed further and further toward a life of moral compromise, stuck between unsympathetic authority figures and career crimin...
