Midnight Music: "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)" by Stevie Wonder

Image
Yours truly is on a BIG Stevie Wonder kick these days, stemming from our acquisition of Stevie Wonder's Original Musiquarium Vol. I  on vinyl, which we picked up at Target for a steal. Bottom line, we're digging into Stevie's catalog, and this track comes from Music of My Mind , one of his lesser-heralded albums, if there is such a thing. Despite the lack of praise for the 1972 record, released under Motown's "Tamla" label, the LP is absolutely packed with stellar songwriting, spacey synthesizers, and a funky swagger that feels playful and makes you move. "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)" is just over eight minutes long, and it really goes to a lot of cool places, turning into something completely different  at the three-minute mark. The composition and instrumentation really takes me away to an ethereal place. This is essentially two songs in one, fused together perfectly. As the midnight hour approaches, kick back, turn out the li

V: The Original Miniseries (1983) Review

Image
"Humankind's last stand!" In the realm of modern science fiction,  V  remains a beloved and continually-relevant concept. In fact, an entire franchise has sprung forth from the mind of writer/producer/director Kenneth Johnson. Through a variety of projects spanning two miniseries and two full television shows, not to mention a series of novels that continue the adventures, V continues to endure as a rousing ode to the human spirit. Warner Archive has now released the complete original miniseries that started it all on Blu-ray. The two-part event, which first aired on NBC on May 1st and May 2nd, 1983, still feels like a big deal, all these years later. The new disc allows us to look back with fresh eyes, thanks to a fantastic HD widescreen transfer that conveys just how cinematic V was and is. The miniseries combines hard-hitting performances with the best '80s special effects available to tell a story that would have been just as fitting on the silver scr

The Skull (1965) Review

Image
A stable of fine English actors, solid source material, and a truly-unnerving feeling of dread make 1965's  The Skull  a standout horror film that levitates above its limitations. There's a lot to appreciate with 1965's The Skull , from the cast, to the story, to the production itself. The film comes from Amicus, a studio that--for a time--stood toe-to-toe with Hammer Films as the pinnacle of British horror. This success was an ironic achievement, considering that Amicus was founded by two Americans working in the English film system. And while this movie doesn't quite have the Gothic grandeur that graces so many Hammer productions, it does excel through a story first penned by legendary genre-writer Robert Bloch (the author of Psycho ), outstanding cinematography, and a capital cast culled from Hammer's finest players.

Scooby-Doo: Return to Zombie Island Movie Review

Image
Note: Warner Brothers Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own. Warner Brothers continues to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Scooby-Doo with this brand new animated movie that's a sequel to one of the most popular and beloved Scooby movies ever made! 21 years after the Scooby Gang first set foot upon Zombie Island, they return to where one of their spookiest, most supernatural encounters occurred. Featuring Elivra: Mistress of the Dark (voiced by Cassandra Peterson) and full of genuine laughs, Scooby-Doo: Return to Zombie Island feels like a love letter to Scooby-Doo!
