Robert johnson, the Delta Blues, & the REAL Crossroads

Image
The legend of Robert Johnson is one of the founding myths of both the Delta Blues and Rock and Roll. Even eighty years later, his life and death still remain shrouded in mystery. Did Robert Johnson meet the devil at the crossroads at midnight, exchanging his soul for the ability to play the blues? More importantly, if those crossroads really exist, where are they? There are multiple sites that are thought to be the "real" crossroads; in this video, I'm going to tell you why I think there's only one truly logical choice. Let's go down to the crossroads together and see what we find.

Blu-ray Review: Code 7...Victim 5/Mozambique

Image
The good people at Blue Underground have rescued and restored a couple of early sixties genre movies in Code 7...Victim 5  and Mozambique , both produced by British indie filmmaker Harry Alan Towers as part of their "Double Feature" line of B movies. As far as I'm aware, both of these movies mark my first real exposure to Towers and his specific brand of schlock. Both films seem to be chasing the exotic location excitement of the James Bond movies, which were still fresh and new back in 1964, and both movies succeed at providing those elements by filming in South Africa. Unfortunately, there's not enough meat on the bones to really make for a totally satisfying movie experience, either.

Midnight Music: "Groovin" by The Young Rascals

Image
Soon to be re-christened simply "The Rascals," these guys sat at the crossroads of R&B and the new brand of rock music appearing in the mid-sixties. They've never been the household names that they should have been, but they had the talent and the had the songs.

Toys R Us: Say Goodbye, Never Forget (Farewell Tribute)

Image
When Toys R Us declared bankruptcy and announced that they were closing most of their stores, many of us found ourselves saying farewell to a living piece of our childhood. Take one last trip into the store with Cereal At Midnight and let's wander the aisles together. This video was filmed just days before the liquidation sales began, when the shelves were stocked and the "going out of business" signs had not been hung yet. If you grew up a Toys R Us kid, this is probably how you'll want to remember the "biggest toy store there is." Though we have to say goodbye, we'll never forget how it felt to visit Toys R Us when we were young. This video is a tribute--not to a corporation, but to our childhood, when the shelves seemed endless, and our imaginations knew no limits.

Scooby-Doo and Batman: The Brave and the Bold Movie Review (Scooby Doo)

Image
In this video, we talk about the new Scooby-Doo/Batman: The Brave and the Bold movie from Warner Brothers. In the grand tradition of Hanna-Barbera animation, this movie combines the best elements of the Scooby Gang with the team-up excitement of Batman: The Brave and the Bold! We'll discuss if the movie lives up to the legacy of both shows, and I'll offer some recommendations of some other animated movies from Warner Brothers that have a similar tone. Make sure your Bat Utility Belt is packed with lots of Scooby snacks!

Let's Talk About Greta Van Fleet

Image
Greta Van Fleet is a band from Michigan that's bringing back good, ol' fashioned rock and roll! Steeped in musical influences that range from the blues to hard rock legends like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and AC/DC, Greta Van Fleet is a band everyone is talking about. In this video, we'll dig into their latest release "From the Fires," explore their musical influences, and speculate about their future.

We Need to Talk About NEW Honeycomb Cereal (Post, Honey Comb)

Image
Honeycomb cereal from Post has been through a change lately, and I'm not sure it's for the better! With the Cereal Wars in full force, companies are doing anything and everything they can to freshen up their brands and rejuvenate older favorites. The latest victim is Honeycomb, and cereal fans everywhere must raise their spoons and their voices!

Digital Comic Books! Plus, Are Comics In Trouble? (Marvel Unlimited, Comixology)

Image
In this video, we take a look at the "digital vs physical" debate, but this time with a focus on comics. Along the way, you'll get my honest take on digital comic book services like Marvel Unlimited and Comixology as well as my assessment of their strengths and weaknesses. Then we dive headfirst into a look at the state of the comic book industry as a whole. Is it in good shape? Is it in trouble? OMG, ARE COMICS DYING?! What you don't know could harm you! On second thought, you'll be fine. We finish the video with a look at the cost of fandom, gate-keeping (*gasp*), and the changing face of collecting. As always, this video is a little bit grumpy, a little bit funny (hopefully), but always totally honest.

DON'T BUY the Sega Genesis Flashback HD from At Games

Image
I picked one of these up today at a big box retailer and couldn't wait to get it home. I'd read the reviews and I knew the console had some issues, but I told myself that I had realistic expectations and I knew the strengths and weaknesses of the system, so I'd just appreciate it for what it was and overlook what it wasn't. Nope.

Gumby: The Movie (1995)

Image
From the "huh?" files comes Gumby: The Movie , aka The Gumby Movie , aka  Gumby 1 .  Until I saw the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack while out shopping last week, this wasn't even on my radar. Boy, I'm glad I found it.
