The majority opinion seems to be that Project Hail Mary  is a near-perfect cinematic experience. "The first truly great movie of 2026," reads the headline from various cinematic pundits and online outlets. There's an adoration associated with it that we rarely see post-pandemic. It seems to work for just about everyone, but I find myself in the minority in thinking that the movie is momentarily pleasing but ultimately fails to fly. I think part of its success is that it's entirely inoffensive, carefully crafted to appeal to the widest market possible with 1) a main character who reflects the weariness of our current times but rises above it, 2) a cute (and marketable) alien sidekick, and 3) a story that has lots of emotional twists. It's the kind of thing general movie audiences eat up. The highest compliment I can award  Prey  is that it feels like neither a sequel or franchise fodder. Technically, it's the latest in a long line of Predator  sequels and spin-offs, but the movie stands on its own by offering a self-contained story that doesn't require any past knowledge of the series or its lore. It also eschews many of the blockbuster's trappings by narrowing its scope to just a handful of characters, keeping the action intimate, and limiting the running time to a restrained 100 minutes--none of which are wasted. The film is a study in economic storytelling in which every part is in service of the whole. A steel trap that gets introduced in Act I gets used in Act II. A line of dialogue about the importance of keeping bow strings dry is foreshadowing of a future event. What would you do if you were given the key to total human extinction? That's the question posed by The 27th Day , a 1957 sci-fi movie from Columbia Pictures. Five strangers from different regions of the world are zapped aboard a space ship where an alien (who calls himself..."The Alien") tells them that his race needs a new planet to inhabit because their sun is about to explode. They have set their sights upon Earth, but their code forbids violence, so they have devised an alternative. Each of the five abductees are given a small box containing three battery-sized cylinders and each cylinder hold the power to destroy all human life in a 3,000 mile radius.  There are a few caveats: each box is mentally attuned to its keeper and can only be opened by that chosen individual; if the owner of the box dies, the weapons within are rendered useless. When I sat down to watch Dünyayı Kurtaran Adam (The Man Who Saves the World) , lovingly known as Turkish Star Wars , the last thing I expected was to be completely entertained. Honestly, this film continues to hurl one bizarre moment after another at the viewer. It is a relentless romp of absurdity. It is cheesy to the extreme. It also takes great liberties with copyright infringements. And, it is absolutely wonderful.
