Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 is a standalone mecha OVA that runs a mere 41 minutes but is a lot of fun. The premise is simple: a military-manufactured mech suit is accidentally lost in Tokyo where it is then found by a regular guy who gets into it without reading the manual.  Because this story isn't associated with any existing series, novels or manga, there's no pressure on it to do anything other than entertain. It isn't setting up a larger world or introducing us to characters that we'll be following for dozens of episodes, it's just a quick little jaunt with mecha fights, a tank battle, and a finale on a skyscraper that looks a little bit like Nakatomi Plaza.  The film is written and directed by Shinji Aramaki, who would later helm Appleseed, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, and  Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045.  Animated in 1987, this is not only the kind of anime that served as the gateway to my own appreciation of the medium, but it's also one of the first anime fea...

Lionsgate has just announced that Ghost in the Shell , one of the most influential and popular anime films of all time, will be coming to 4K UHD/Blu-ray/Digital on September 8th to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The 4K presentation will feature Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and will feature artwork from pop illustrator Martin Ansin as well as brand new bonus material. This release is being touted as "the most definitive Ghost in the Shell  package to date." Special features include an audio commentary featuring Mary Claypool (Animation Writer and English Language Scriptwriter), Eric Calderon (Animation Producer and Writer), Richard Epcar (Voice of "Batou"), and Charles Solomon (Animation Historian and Critic) as well as two new bonus featurettes: "Accessing Section 9: 25 Years into the Future" and "Landscapes & Dreamscapes: The Art and Architecture of Ghost in the Shell ."  MSRP is $22.99

After years of being out of print and commanding ever-increasing prices on eBay and other second-hand seller markets, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will release box sets collecting the entire series of both  He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and She-Ra: Princess of Power  on October 1st! All 130 episodes of the original He-Man  series will be presented on 16 discs and all 93 episodes of the original She-Ra  television series are presented on 12 discs. Both box sets include a ton of extras, and both sets will contain the feature-length documentary  Power of Grayskull: The Definitive History of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe  as well as the feature film  He-Man and She-Ra: Secret of the Sword  and the hour-long  He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special.  But that's not all!
