When is a slasher film more than just a slasher film? Such a question applies to 1982's Deadly Games , originally created under the title Who Fell Asleep . The overall tropes of the horror sub-genre are here: a masked killer who dresses all in black and who often murders his victims in creative and gruesome ways, a cast of attractive women/victims who have trouble keeping their clothes on, even a Final Girl that the audience can clearly champion as she faces off against her stalker.  But Deadly Games complicates things by introducing more mature elements that are harder to categorize, making this anything but routine. Instead of teenagers, we have an older cast of adults--some of whom are married. There's still sex and drama, but these issues play out in a very different way than slasher movies that deal primarily with young people who sneak away from the group for a quick tumble in the back of dad's Buick. 1978's The Toolbox Murders  comes near the very end of the seventies grindhouse horror scene, arriving amidst the glut of ultra-low-budget shock-fests that followed 1974's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre , but still predating the slasher cycle that would dominate the 1980s. The title is deceptively simple, though accurate: a ski-masked killer stalks an apartment complex and kills women with implements from his box of tools, including a nail gun, a hammer, and a drill. Freud would have a field day with that symbolism, but is there more to this Video Nasty than meets the eye?  On the page, The Toolbox Murders  is not particularly remarkable. It was conceived--as all exploitation movies are--primarily as a way to make money. 1988's My Stepmother is an Alien  is a very strange movie that could only have been made in the 1980s. Part lusty sex comedy, part sincere family tale, it never really figures out what it wants to be. Its greatest success, and the reason to view the movie all these years later, is for the powerhouse performance from Kim Basinger. Coming just two years after her steamy, career-making turn in 9 1/2 Weeks , this movie takes a pretty big risk on Basinger, who must not only look stunning, but also be funny. Her comedic skills were not a known quantity in 1988, but lucky for us, she's hilarious. Playing up the fish-out-of-water (or alien-out-of-space) theme perfectly, Basinger soars as an intergalactic being who must convince a physicist to share his research with her so she can save her cosmic home.
