A few times a year, a small handful of aspiring blockbusters manage to break through my franchise fatigue and rekindle--even if only briefly--the fleeting feeling of "gee whiz" excitement that made me a movie fan to begin with. The latest tentpole movie to do this is 2023's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem , the first truly unique take on Eastman and Laird's satirical comic book creation in what feels like forever. In those early comics, the TMNT were a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the gritty comics movement of the 1980s, which made their mainstream success downright ironic. Over the decades, we've had many cartoon, live action, and CGI interpretations of the property ranging from the silly to the bizarre (paging Michael Bay), but none of them have ever felt like Mutant Mayhem. What is it about the new movie that clicks and makes it feel so different? In a word, "joy." This is the most joyful comic book movie I've seen since 2018's S...

Cereal At Midnight is back with another commentary, and this time we're celebrating the anniversary of 1990's Dick Tracy! It's been thirty years since Warren Beatty brought the colorful hero and his cartoon menagerie of villains to the screen in one of the first comic book movies of its kind. The spectacle was huge, the art was gorgeous, and the scope was ambitious. Madonna! Multiple Academy Award winners in crazy makeup! Al Pacino doing Al Pacino! Grab your two-way wrist radio, yellow trench coat and hat, and ride shotgun with Heath and Eric Grigs from PopTrashMuseum.com as we revisit the comic book movie event of 1990!  Be sure to read Eric Grigs' article about Dick Tracy at Pop Trash Museum!

The Rocketeer has arrived! Dave Stevens' pulp hero soars off the comic book page and onto movie screens in this 1991 homage to Old Hollywood as well as to the serials and heroes of the forties. Join Heath and writer Josh Jabcuga as we revisit this hidden gem and explore how The Rocketeer has influenced the movies of today, including the very foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Strap in for the adventure of a lifetime! Find it at Patreon.com/CerealAtMidnight !

Cereal At Midnight sits down for a spoiler-free discussion about the latest DC movie from Warner Brothers: Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn ! Margot Robbie is back as the iconic anti-hero, and this time, she's got friends!

Let's talk toys! In this video, we travel back to 1990 to spotlight the Playmates toy line for what was planned to be the biggest movie of the summer. Dick Tracy may not have been the smash hit that some were expecting, but it still had a huge impact on a young Heath. This one's dedicated to the action figures of our childhood and the fantastic summer of 1990!

Heath is joined by Joshua Jabcuga, IDW Comics writer and All Elite Wrestling journalist, for this audio commentary of 1989's Batman, a movie that changed everything and kicked the comic book movie into overdrive! This commentary was originally recorded in March of 2019 for Patreon to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Batman. We're releasing it wide to celebrate Batman Day 2019! We hope you enjoy this loving look at Tim Burton's landmark film, which stars Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Kim Bassinger. Follow Joshua Jabcuga on Instagram and Twitter @Jabcuga! You can check out Cereal At Midnight's review of his comic adaptation of Bubba Ho-Tep and the Cosmic Blood-Suckers HERE!

In this Five Minute Review, we visit The Kitchen, a new mob/crime movie starring Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elizabeth Moss. The story is based on an original comic book series published under DC's Vertigo label and is both written and directed by Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) in her directorial debut.

In this Spinner Rack Bros team-up spectacular, Cereal At Midnight and Comic Book Savant reflect on over a decade in the geek community as podcasters, bloggers, and YouTube content creators, and ask a tough question: "are there too many comic book movies?" The answer may surprise you!

Shazam!  is the latest film to adapt classic DC Comics characters (or Fawcett Comics characters, in this case) to the big screen, and it's the most fun I've had at a modern DC film to date. Maybe that's because I'm not overly steeped in the history and lore of Billy Batson, the mystical wizard, or The Rock of Eternity (which is the name of my album). Maybe it's because I've sat the last few DC films out, exhausted after the CGI spectacle of mass destruction fueled by Zack Snyder's desire to make this universe full of muck and grime , inspired more by the likes of Frank Miller and Alan Moore than by Neal Adams and Julius Schwartz. When Shazam! works, it's because it's having fun with its central premise. Billy Batson, a troubled orphan with a heart of gold, is granted magical powers when he utters the secret word and is transformed into a hero bigger than Superman. The wonder and joy of a kid who suddenly finds he has super powers allows this ...
