Review: Night Key (1937)

Image
1937's Night Key is considered a minor Universal film, delivering more of a crime story with some loose science fiction elements rather than a typical horror story. Still, it has some things going for it. Boris Karloff, just a few years removed from terrifying the world as Frankenstein's monster, plays a slightly-doddering, grandfatherly inventor who has been wronged by a former business partner. Playing Karloff's daughter is Jean Rogers, aka Dale Arden from the Buster Crabbe Flash Gordon serials. While she does serve as a damsel in distress later in the movie, she holds her own as a no-nonsense woman who solidly anchors the B-story and has nearly as much screen time as Boris himself. Joshua Jabcuga Has Some Cool Recs to Guide You Through the Dog Days of Summer! Hell Comes To Frogtown Sure, you’ve seen “Rowdy” Roddy Piper in John Carpenter’s They Live , but are you familiar with this 80s oddity? Frogtown is certainly a product of its time and yet, if you’ve had the pleasure of watching this movie (or if you’ve read the film’s synopsis), you’re likely asking yourself, what time was that exactly? When it comes to the Hot Rod, I don’t have to remind you that just when you thought you knew the answers, he changed the questions. So turn off your brain and enjoy this ultimate throwback to the days of your local Mom & Pop video store deep dive discoveries. Preorder directly from www.VinegarSyndrome.com if you need to have the slipcover edition (a “V-shaped split cover” limited to 3,000 units). Personally, I’m fairly indifferent about slipcovers; I’m more concerned with what’s in the box than the actual packaging—however, nobody rocks slipcovers like the fi...

Comic Book Spotlight: "Atari Force"

Image
In this video, we shine a spotlight on the DC Comics series Atari Force, which ran from 1984-1986. Over the course of 20 issues, the comic book told the story of a ragtag group of survivors who found themselves united under a common cause. Aboard their ship, Scanner One, the Atari Force worked to defeat the Dark Destroyer, a shadowy figure bent on destruction. With such famous creative talent as Gerry Conway, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Mike Baron, and Eduardo Barreto, Atari Force was a completely standalone title that featured some of comics' biggest talents. For fans of late seventies and early eighties sci-fi/space opera fare such as Star Wars, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and Battlestar Galactica.
