The modern era of Nicolas Cage's career has seen the actor taking wild risks and seeking roles that interest and engage him. Sometimes those risks pay off, other times they don't. On paper, Cage as Dracula sounds like inspired casting, and let's face it, this is the stuff that cult movie dreams are made of.  Unfortunately, Nic Cage can't save Renfield . Sure, he's clearly having fun in the movie, but the dirty little secret of this movie is that Cage is a supporting player who doesn't have all that much screen time. Nobody should be surprised, since the movie is titled " Renfield ", but it's a shame because whenever Cage is on screen, the movie is engaging and fun. When he's not--which is too often--it fails.  Is Renfield a comedy? It's not funny. Is it horror? There are no frights. Is it an action movie in the vein of John Wick ? A spiritual predecessor to 1967's The Graduate , Bus Riley's Back in Town depicts the suburban ennui of the oddly-named title character, played wonderfully by Michael Parks, who seems to be having a lot of fun in his feature film debut after several years of guest starring on episodic television. Bus is just back from a stint in the military with a new tattoo and plans to ease back into the life he left behind before his service. It's not going to be easy; between family struggles, finding a job, and learning that his ex-girlfriend (Ann-Margret) is now married to a wealthy businessman, civilian life will prove to be a bigger challenge than he thought.  There's a tonal inconsistency that I appreciate here. Like many movies from this part of the sixties, the film seems to promise big, swingin' fun. The score that opens the story is full of brassy bombast and it looks like we're about to enjoy a sexy comedy. Before long, though, the film reveals deeper layers about...

This better-than-average western features Audie Murphy in his youthful prime. At only 5 foot 5 inches tall, Murphy may not have had the screen presence of a Hollywood leading man, but the fact that he was one of the most highly-decorated soldiers of World War II lends heaps of credibility to his star power and believability. Here he gets to play a character that's heroic but also has some of the qualities of a scoundrel--think Han Solo back when Han shot first. Murphy plays Reb Kittredge, a mercenary who served as a hired gun during the Johnson County War. His reputation precedes him when he finds himself the patsy in the middle of a land scheme (it's more interesting than it sounds) involving a ranch, some cattle, and a whole bunch of people that want to see him hung out to dry. Kittredge has a core of nobility, but he's not against settling disputes with his pistol.
