With several new cinnamon-flavored cereals making their debut on crowded shelves nationwide, the question on everyone's mind is "Who will be the last cereal standing?" Begun, the Cinnamon War has. Let's stick a spoon in the new offering from Kellogg's and see how it fares.

Dokken: "Dream Warriors" (Acoustic)

Image
I'm in a Dokken mood and wanted to share this. Here's an acoustic performance of one of my favorite Dokken songs, "Dream Warriors," written for the soundtrack of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors . I believe this particular performance is taken from the band's  Japan Live '95 DVD, which features the original group, reunited after having gone their separate ways for a few years .   I love this song, but I think I love it even more in this stripped down interpretation where the melodies can really shine. Plus, check out those outstanding harmonies from bassist Jeff Pilson! This is one that Don still occasionally performs acoustically at some of his shows.

Review: White Lightning (1973) and Gator (1976)

Image
Burt Reynolds spent a lot of the 1970s making movies that were set in the rural south and are sometimes called "hick flicks." With the two Gator McKlusky movies, we have one of his best and...another one.

Chuck Berry: "Big Boys"

Image
In the wake of Chuck Berry's passing, the Berry Family and Dualtone Records have released "Big Boys," the first single from his final studio album. Long in development and announced last October,  Chuck  will finally be released on June 16. I can't wait. This music sounds fantastic, as if no time has passed since he first burst onto the scene in the fifties. I had wondered what rock and roll must sound like at the age of 90, and this is the answer: it sounds like Chuck Berry. Preorder Chuck  from Dualtone Records  HERE.

A Town Called Santa Claus

Image
Somewhere in Georgia lies a small town that goes by the name of Santa Claus. Though the main square is only about the size of a city block, the entire area has been branded with Christmas theming all year long.

Review: King Solomon's Mines (1985)

Image
If adventure has a cousin, it must be Allan Quatermain. King Solomon's Mines has had quite the lifespan. The story began life in 1885 as an adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard. Some call Haggard the father of the "Lost World" sub-genre, and still others consider him to be the ancestor of the kind of pulp fiction that dominated comic and newsstand shelves from the '30s to the '60s. There have been six feature films based on his book, with the most notable movie versions being made in 1937 and 1950. This 1985 version is the first one that seems to be made with laughs in mind. Honestly, I don't think much of what was in that original novel has survived for the screen in this particular adaptation. Now, thanks to Olive Films, I've recently had a chance to revisit Cannon's 1985's pulp adventure film   King Solomon's Mines. I hadn't watched the movie in years, probably since the '90s, and I was excited to see how it held up. Thankful

Review: When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (1970)

Image
Warner Archive has delivered another beautiful Blu-ray and DVD from their vast catalog. This time we're treated to dinosaurs, a sixties Playmate, and lots of surf and sand, courtesy of the Canary Islands. What more could a movie fan ask for? Well, a lot, actually.  When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth  is a 1970 cult film (I hesitate to use the word "classic") from Hammer Films, the same studio that brought us Christopher Lee as Dracula and Peter Cushing as Van Helsing and Dr. Frankenstein. They're an icon of the horror movie landscape for giving film audiences the kind of scares, gore, and titillating situations that other major studios shied away from during the fifties. Fast forward a decade: long after Hammer had run their core Dracula  and Frankenstein  franchises into the ground, they produced a spate of prehistoric-themed movies, kick-started by the now-iconic 1966 movie  One Million Years, B.C. , starring Raquel Welch. That movie felt fresh and engaging, not j
