Review: Hoppers (2026)

Image
Funny, sweet, and a movie that reveals an increasing insanity as it unfolds, Hoppers —like last year’s Elio —is a Disney/Pixar movie for people who complain that Disney is out of new ideas and everything is a sequel or franchise film. Hoppers is unlike anything we’ve seen before in this particular field or genre, which opens the door to lots of surprises. Thankfully, the trailers have kept most of the movie’s secrets unrevealed. Best experienced on a massive screen, and be sure to stay through the end credits—ALL the way to the end. Pixar movies continue to remind us, in delightfully-entertaining ways, that a better tomorrow is up to us today. I’m grateful that for all their sequels, Pixar continues to take major swings on new ideas.

This Is Bad.

Review - Tron: Ares

Image
Greetings, Programs, and welcome to The Grid. The third Tron  movie, made some 40+ years after the original, has no right to be this much fun. With a relentless score by Nine Inch Nails and visuals that feel lifted directly from a retro gamer's wildest dreams, Tron: Ares  eschews a traditional cinematic approach and instead opts for something akin to a fever dream of insane visuals set to Trent Reznor's dark, synth-wave-inspired beats. One does not watch Tron: Ares expecting a three-act structure (though that's here...mostly) nuanced character development, and relatable performances. No, this movie is like grabbing the handlebars of a lightcycle and holding on for dear life as it careens at high speed through three-dimensional psychedelic mandalas the likes of which I can't recall EVER having seen on screen before.  If you're looking for themes, they're here, though only in the broadest strokes: AI has arrived, and with it, the technology to make our worlds inf...

Disney's Hollywood Studios is Old School Cool | Classic Movies and The Hollywood That Never Was

Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park was built as an homage to the Hollywood that never was: a mythic Hollywood of movie magic. Unscripted: Do We Really Want New, Original Movies?

Image
We say we want new, original movies that aren't based on previously-existing IP and that aren't sequels, reboots, or franchise films. But the box office--and our spending habits--tells a different story. Review: Lilo and Stitch (2025)

Image
Lilo and Stitch is the latest in what has become a long line of "live action" remakes of Disney animated classics, a blatant attempt by the House of Mouse to inject some fresh life back into properties that were once successful, but that might have cooled over the years. With Disney, everything in their storied history is fodder for a remake or sequel. Bob Iger, the divisive head of the company, calls this "IP mining," which is every bit as cold and calculating as it sounds. Now, just a couple of months after Disney's new refresh of Snow White , they turn their attention to one of the most beloved properties of the last 25 years.  This new version of Lilo and Stitch is fun and heartwarming, but also completely forgettable. Certain elements of the production, such as the aliens that pursue Experiment 626 (played here by Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen) don't really lend themselves to live action, so these characters are therefore "in disguise...

Review: Snow White (2025)

Image
Once upon a time, there was Disney magic. What is it? Hard to say. We only know how it makes us feel, and we know that as we get older, that feeling becomes more and more difficult to recapture. It doesn't help that Disney floods the market with remakes, reboots, and sequels, watering down a once-potent brand that many of us associate with originality. Disney Head Honcho Bob Iger calls it "IP mining," a term that is as accurate as it is cynical.  With this baggage, I went into Snow White hoping for a spark of that thing that largely now only survives as nostalgia. Enthusiasm was low and my guard was up. After all, the discussion around this film has been exhausting, and it began long before any of us even had a chance to see it. Movies made before this modern era never had to overcome so much outrage before a single second had been projected for an audience.  But before long, probably about 20 minutes in, my defenses began to lower. I found myself smiling. The music--lar...

Review: Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

Image
Deadpool & Wolverine is less a movie and more a collection of fan service, references, and easter eggs. At the same time, it's a shot in the arm for the flagging Marvel Cinematic Universe, which really should have ended (or at least gone into hibernation) following Avengers: Endgame. Listen, everyone knows the score here: Deadpool exists to break the fourth wall and offering meta commentary on the experience of the film as it happens. It's both refreshing and exhausting in equal portions, but the constant inside jokes that call out everything from other Ryan Reynolds movies to the Disney purchase of Fox to deep cuts for comic book aficionados effectively render non-stop dopamine hits for the viewer that keep things moving along and distract us from the shortcomings of the story. Take out all the fun references and what we're left with isn't much: Deadpool's reality is collapsing because Logan sacrificed himself a few years ago (in 2017's LOGAN, natch), and n...

Review: Haunted Mansion (2023)

Image
It must be easier to turn a hit movie into a theme park ride than it is to turn a beloved ride into a film. Maybe that's why there are many  great theme park rides based on movies, but so few great movies that started life as a ride. Goodness knows Disney has tried. For decades, Disneyphiles have begrudgingly supported movies like  Tower of Terror and Country Bears out of a sense of loyalty, despite diminished returns. The list of ride-to-film adaptations is surprisingly long, including The Jungle Cruise , Mission to Mars, and even Tomorrowland , which isn't a ride at all, but an entire area within the Disney parks. For every Pirates of the Caribbean , there's a movie that didn't quite work. Disney first attempted to adapt their famous haunted house dark ride into a film with 2003's The Haunted Mansion , starring Eddie Murphy. That version is not without its charms, but it failed to capture the spirit (wink wink) of the attraction that many fans--including myself--n...
