Review: Bury Me An Angel (1971)

Image
Get your motor running / head out on the highway lookin' for a shotgun / so you can make that killer pay 1971's Bury Me An Angel  comes from the Roger Corman school of cheap thrills and drive-in chills. At its core, it's a revenge picture, but there are other youth-appealing elements on the screen including shocking violence, nudity, and a titillating twist that the movie reveals in its final moments. This is an exploitation picture through and through, written and directed by Barbara Peeters ( Humanoids From the Deep ) in her first solo outing behind the camera. Because there's a woman at the helm, the film treats its salacious elements with   a little more grace and artistic flair than your usual motorcycle movie. There's still skin, blood, and gallons of gasoline in every frame, but the camera is a bit more sympathetic, especially during a smoldering love scene with...well, more on that in a second. Bury Me An Angel  opens with Dag (newcomer Dixie Peabody, Night ...

Midnight Music: "A Cowboy's Work Is Never Done" by Sonny and Cher

Image
1971's "A Cowboy's Work Is Never Done" is a spaghetti western anthem in need of a movie. With banjo, brass, and a wah-wah guitar that's feels straight from the Spanish deserts by way of Italy, it's so evocative of a certain kind of movie that it becomes impossible to distinguish where art and influence meet. The song also features cunning and suggestive lyrics that serve as a nice counter-point to the wholesome image the duo were projecting each week in their variety show. From the album All I Ever Need is You , which has still not been released in its entirety on CD, this song is so evocative, so well-produced by Snuff Garrett (who specialized in country hits), it's hard not to love.

Ultraman Orb: The Origin Saga and Return of Ultraman Headed to Blu-ray February, 2020!

Image
Mill Creek Entertainment has officially announced the release dates for the next two entries in the Ultraman Blu-ray library! Ultraman Orb: The Origin Saga  arrives on February 11 in a two-disc set collecting all twelve episodes plus bonus features, which include the 2017 special Ultra Fight Orb . Two weeks later on February 25th,  Return of Ultraman, the fourth series in the iconic franchise, arrives in a six-disc set collecting al 51 episodes and featuring a choice of Steelbook and Standard packaging. Both shows will also feature a digital redemption voucher for MovieSpree, Mill Creek's proprietary streaming service. Ultraman Orb: The Origin Saga is a prequel to the popular Ultraman Orb  series (which marked the 50th anniversary of Ultraman  and is one of our favorites here at Cereal At Midnight) and shows how the characters came to possess the powers we see in Orb. The special, Ultra Fight Orb , picks up right after the events of the Ultraman Orb movie, ...

Rolling Stones From the Vault: Sticky Fingers Live at the Fonda Theatre 2015

Image
As a fan of The Rolling Stones, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that this is the first one of their "From the Vault" releases that I've purchased, though I believe this is the seventh one they've put out. Part of what's been keeping me away is that there are simply too many choices. Consider this release, which can be bought on a DVD/3-LP set, a Blu-ray/CD combo, a DVD/CD combo, and a standalone Blu-ray. Too many options means I can't decide which one of those I want the most. They all have their pros and cons. In the end, I chose the Blu-ray/CD combo, so that's the source for this review. I'll mostly be talking about the Blu-ray of the concert itself, because the music on the CD is the same. Sticky Fingers  is widely regarded as one of the band's absolute best, coming three-quarters of the way through their absolute artistic and creative power. There are four albums that prove the Rolling Stones to be the greatest rock and roll band eve...
