Review: Alphaville (1965)

Image
Jean-Luc Godard's future noir is opaque, obtuse, and at times flat-out tedious. It's also extremely ambitious and filled with ideas that have aged so well that the film feels more relevant than ever before.  When secret agent Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine) arrives in the space city of Alphaville, it looks and feels just like 1965 Paris. Instead of a ray gun and an elaborate communicator, he has a pistol and a cigarette lighter, which serve the same purposes. No doubt Godard was making the most out of the materials and locations he had on hand to keep this modestly-budgeted film affordable, but was he also commenting on the world of the mid-sixties and its jet-powered, atomic-fueled progress? Either way, the cinematography of mid-sixties Paris by Raoul Coutard is breathtaking. In the film, a super computer named Alpha 60 has weeded out all undesirable qualities of life by turning the citizens into mindless automatons. Those who stray from the group think or show any emotion, ...

Review: Between The Temples (2024)

Image
Co/writer and director Nathan Silver delivers a slice of life story that it equal parts funny, sad, and discomforting. At the center of this tale about love, loss, and Judaism is Jason Schwartzman (who gained noticeable weight for the part) and Carol Kane, who lights up the screen in every scene she appears in. When Ben (Schwartzman) meets Carla (Kane), he's at the end of his rope: his wife has died, he's lost his faith, and this church canter can longer even sing. Carla was once his voice and music teacher decades ago, and the two strike up an unlikely relationship in which they each help fill some of the holes in each other's hearts. Shot on 16mm film, the movie has a grainy, low-fi look that establishes an appropriately noisy aesthetic. The camera is often far too close to its subject, making us feel as uncomfortable and awkward as the characters. The film has laugh-out-loud moments, but this isn't a traditional comedy and will appeal to a quiet and thoughtful audien...

Strange Darling | Bloody, Beautiful, and Brilliant (Non-Spoiler Review)

Image
The less said about the plot of Strange Darling the better (it's best discovered with no foreknowledge), but it's nice to see writer/director JT Mollner playing with the form and approaching the story unconventionally. Like many movies that rely on twists that keep the audience guessing, this movie is going to have the strongest potency during the viewer's first screening. What resonated with me more than the story was the acting, cinematography, and form of the film. Willa Fitzgerald gives a star-making performance that keeps evolving. By the time the film nears its end, much of the movie rests entirely on her shoulders, and she wears it well. Kyle Gallner has to carry quite a bit of the film as well, and he is believable in every scenario. The real star is the cinematography by Giovanni Ribisi, an actor I've long enjoyed, but who seems to be entirely in his element behind the camera lens. Shot entirely on 35mm, Strange Darling doesn't look like any other movie i...

Review: Bob The Gambler (Bob Le Flambeur, 1956)

Image
The English title Bob The Gambler  doesn't quite do justice to Jean-Pierre Melville's portrait of a criminal at the end of his rope. The original French title, Bob Le Flambeur , raises the stakes and implies risk--and risk is a major element of this film. Bob Montagne (played by Roger Duchesne, whose real life is every bit as interesting as that of his character) is a career gambler who inhabits the shadow realm between night and day. Clad in a trench coat with a fedora pulled down to shadow his stubbled face, he's a wraith who stalks the alleys of Montmarte, always one step ahead of the police who congenially follow his exploits with a touch of envy.  But Bob has been on a losing streak, and his run has nearly come to an end. He's without funds and without prospects, and he's too old to start over. This is when Bob realizes that he has the knowledge and experience to mount a casino heist that could make him--and those who choose to help him--rich beyond their drea...

Review: Naughty Girl (Cette sacrée gamine, 1956)

Image
Brigitte Bardot delights in this charming romantic comedy of errors. The action takes place in and around a nightclub where our male lead is the star performer--think Desi Arnaz in I Love Lucy : He's got the band, the dancers, and a huge act that people come from all over to see. There's a plot about fake money being trafficked through the club and an investigation by the police, but it's all an excuse to have the club's owner leg it out of the country until the whole thing blows over, leaving his young (but sexy) daughter behind with no clue of his whereabouts. The star nightclub performer is tasked with hiding the girl in his apartment, leading to all sorts of misadventures. This is, after all, a comedy. Ms. Bardot was 21 or 22 at the time of the film's production and her appeal cannot be denied. She gets three lavish fantasy dance sequences that would make Gene Kelly jealous, and the filmmakers take every opportunity to put her in glamorous (and skimpy) clothing....

Kneecap Review | Fresh, Funny, and Not For The Faint-Hearted

Image
Kneecap is--in a word--stunning. Here's another: "relentless." From the start, it grabs the viewer by the gut (or something lower) and never lets go as it leads us through drug-fueled misadventures and politically-charged social battles that feel as combustible as barrels of TNT, waiting to explode.  Biopics are a risky proposition, as they tend to lionize and occasionally even deify their subjects. They're also full of fictions that are passed off as facts to further propel the legacies of their central figures into the pop culture stratosphere. "When the truth becomes legend, print the legend." Kneecap doesn't do that; our three leads, who play slightly-fictionalized versions of themselves, are presented warts and all, fully human and with inconvenient rough edges. Performances feel natural. In fact, it's hard to believe these guys aren't all professional actors, as they seem completely comfortable on camera. Our hip hop anti-heroes hold thei...
