Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Mutant Mayhem

Image
A few times a year, a small handful of aspiring blockbusters manage to break through my franchise fatigue and rekindle--even if only briefly--the fleeting feeling of "gee whiz" excitement that made me a movie fan to begin with. The latest tentpole movie to do this is 2023's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem , the first truly unique take on Eastman and Laird's satirical comic book creation in what feels like forever. In those early comics, the TMNT were a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the gritty comics movement of the 1980s, which made their mainstream success downright ironic. Over the decades, we've had many cartoon, live action, and CGI interpretations of the property ranging from the silly to the bizarre (paging Michael Bay), but none of them have ever felt like Mutant Mayhem. What is it about the new movie that clicks and makes it feel so different? In a word, "joy." This is the most joyful comic book movie I've seen since 2018's S...

Review: Kansas Raiders (1950)

Image
I like it when Audie Murphy plays mean. After all, we're talking about the most decorated combat soldier in the history of the U.S. military, a man who was not only familiar with violence, but also celebrated for it. 1950's Kansas Raiders  gives the soldier-turned-actor a chance to sink his teeth into one of the meatiest roles of his still-fledgling acting career: the legendary outlaw Jesse James. Hollywood has always had a special fascination with outlaws, often celebrating them while clumsily and half-heartedly trying to insert some sort of moral lesson, mostly to keep the censors happy. I can't help but think of the episode of The Brady Bunch where Bobby sees a movie about Jesse James and then decides that he's his hero and has to be corrected by his chagrinned parents. That's a pretty good metaphor for Hollywood's love affair with the dark side--"mischief sure is fun! Er...but it's wrong."  Kansas Raiders  is the fictionalized tale of the James...

Review: Elvis Presley - Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite (50th Anniversary Edition)

Image
One of the bright spots in this dwindling physical media age (sales, not volume) has been the rise of the 50th Anniversary reissue. Many times, these exist as copyright extensions, ensuring that the material remains profitable for the rights holders long after the original artists have left this planet. However, for the musicologist and aficionado who loves digging into alternate takes, demos, and rehearsal performances--all brought to stunning new clarity thanks to skillfully-remastered audio, these reissues offer a bounty of bonuses for those willing to invest. Elvis Presley's crowning achievement--and perhaps the last great pinnacle of his mighty musical career--is Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite , a performance and broadcast that brought him into 1.5 billion homes all around the world. If the 68 Comeback Special is a reclamation of his throne as The King of Rock 'n Roll, Aloha From Hawaii is the jeweled crown, worn with dignity, authority, and humor. Audio-wise, the track...

Review: All God's Children - Songs From the British Jesus Rock Revolution 1967-1974

Image
What do The Kinks, Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, The Hollies, Gerry Rafferty, and The Strawbs all have in common? Would you believe they all recorded songs about God, Jesus, or Christianity? Now those songs, and dozens of others, are collected together on All God's Children: Songs from the British Jesus Rock Revolution 1967-1974 ,  a sweeping four-hour survey of early faith-based rock and pop from Cherry Red Records.  When Elton John sang "Jesus freaks out in the street, handing tickets out for God" in the hit "Tiny Dancer," he was talking about what was happening in California. In fact, the Jesus movement of the late sixties and early seventies--in which thousands of hippies adopted Jesus Christ as a role model and took to the streets to proselytize their newfound faith-- is often connected to the USA, with San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district serving as ground zero for the current Mega-Church mythology. But that's only...

Review: The Fastest Guitar Alive (1967)

Image
It worked for Elvis, why not Roy Orbison? Back in 1967, MGM took a chance on the rock pioneer by trying to make him the star of a light and fluffy musical film with youth appeal. To achieve this, Sam Katzman hired Michael D. Moore, one of the greatest and most prolific second unit and assistant directors in the biz; seriously, his IMDb page is like a greatest hits of cinema. Moore had served as A.D. on many outstanding projects-- The Ten Commandments  and  War of the Worlds being just two of them-- and had ridden shotgun on a whole string of Elvis movies : King Creole, G.I. Blues , Blue Hawaii, Girls! Girls! Girls!, Fun in Acapulco, and  Roustabout. In 1966, he'd graduated to full-fledged director on the Elvis vehicle Paradise, Hawaiian Style , which had turned a small profit at the box office. There may have been nobody better suited to try to copy the formula that had clicked so well for The King to his Sun Records brethren Roy Orbison.  It didn't work. Unsur...

Review: The Flash (2023)

Image
I approached  The Flash with optimism: after all, this is THE FLASH, staple of the JLA, the Scarlet Speedster, whom I've loved ever since my pre-school days watching  Super Friends  back when disco ruled (okay, disco still rules). What's more, it brings back Michael Keaton--MY Batman, mind you, and the first big-screen Dark Detective, solving crimes with his investigation skills decades before Pattinson. Plus, The Flash  promises a fun thrill ride across time and space, which is a welcome change of pace from the angsty grimaces that fill most of WB's comic book movies. How could anyone screw this up?  It really hurts to say this, but The Flash  is a mess. Where to begin?  This is a multiverse movie. A few years ago, the prospect of seeing comic book multiverses brought to cinematic life felt fresh and exciting, but we've been fire-hosed with them lately (I can think of four others so far this year alone) and they already feel stale. In this story, Barr...
