Review: Robot Jox (1989)

Image
Robot Jox is the movie that killed Empire Pictures . With a reported budget of $10 million dollars, this is by far the most ambitious, expensive, and risky undertaking in the company's history. The movie ended up sitting unfinished for a couple of years before being picked up by another company, completed, and eventually released. How does it stand up to that legacy? Pretty well, actually. Robot Jox is the culmination of the 80s giant robot craze that kids like me were lapping up through franchises like Transformers , Robotech and Voltron --huge robots, duking it out in massive battlefields, with honor and pride on the line. I suppose comparisons to Japanese shows like Ultraman and Kamen Rider are in order, but really, the classic 80s toy and cartoon properties I grew up with felt a million miles from the Toku shows of the 1960s and 1970s. Back before the geeks inherited the earth and comic book and genre movies became blockbuster mainstays, Robot Jox was about as close as ...

Review: Arena (1989)

Image
Arena is one of the most ambitious movies ever to come out of Charles Band's Empire Pictures . It's essentially Rocky in space, but in today's world of 300 million dollar blockbusters, we must remember that this movie was made in an era where CGI had not yet become a reliable or affordable tool and most of what we see on screen was achieved with rubber suits, matte shots, and clever photography, all captured in a formerly-abandoned studio in Rome without benefit of Hollywood unions or oversight. Confession: I never found Arena to be particularly compelling. Until recently I'd only seen Arena in standard definition and in a 4:3 "full frame" presentation. Thanks to a recent restoration by Arrow Video for Blu-ray which sources a widescreen HD version of the film from a 35mm print, I'm now viewing this exploitation gem through a whole new lens. The costumes are stunning. The sets are massive. The world is created fully and with much detail, belying its low...

Review: Cellar Dweller (1988)

Image
Cellar Dweller feels like an episode of Tales From The Crypt that's been blown up to feature length...and that's both a good and a bad thing. it's good because the premise hails from the 1980s golden age of the horror anthology that gave us Tales from the Darkside , Creepshow , Amazing Stories and the aforementioned Tales from the Crypt . It's bad because this is not an anthology film and the premise isn't strong enough (or written well enough) to flesh out a feature film. We start with a cool idea: in 1955, a comic book creator (played by Re-Animator 's Jeffrey Combs) draws an occult monster attacking a scantily-clad woman, which he then accidentally brings to life when he reads an incantation from a dark tome (as all comics creators do, presumably). 30 years later, the house where this dark deed occurred is now a haven for artists and outcasts. Enter a new prodigy (Debrah Farentino) who loves comics and wants to tap into the energy of the spot where her her...

Review: Dolls (1987)

Image
Would the Puppet Master franchise exist without Dolls ? Probably not, since this is the movie that proved to Charles Band that inanimate objects could be brought to life on an affordable B-movie budget. Director Stuart Gordon steers the narrative in the direction of a dark fairy tale rather than an outright horror movie, though there's plenty of blood to be found. The doll effects are astonishing considering they're accomplished with practical effects like stop motion and puppetry. While not an outright horror film, the rules of horror are in full effect here, giving the advantage of survival to the virtuous and young at heart while providing a gruesome fate for the selfish and cruel. Guy Rolfe is great as the doll maker; he delivers his lines with a mix of sweetness and menace. Similarly, Hilary Mason walks the same line, though it feels like she has slightly less screen presence than Rolfe, who owns every scene he's in.  Pop culture junkies will appreciate the presence o...

Review: The Dungeonmaster (1984)

Image
Behold, the low budget/high concept majesty of Charles Band's Empire Pictures ! The Dungeonmaster , aka Ragewar , really packs 200 pounds of ambition in a 100 pound sack; behind the "computers are magic" aesthetic lies an early-80s charm that disarms the viewer and prevents us from being more critical of just how cheesy this movie actually is. The plot is just an excuse to employ a series of segments in different genres: a supernatural bad guy (Richard Moll with a ton of hair) kidnaps the aerobics instructor girlfriend of our computer whiz hero who must battle for her across a series of challenges, each of which feels like the premise of an Atari game, i.e. the ice maze, the giant statue come to life, and so on. Each challenge is a unique segment that's written and directed by a different person, making this adventure akin to an anthology film, albeit with the same cast throughout. Employing hand-drawn animation, stop-motion, and even puppetry, these segments never la...

Review: The Tall T (1957)

Image
1957's The Tall T is one of my all-time favorite westerns for many reasons. It's part of the highly-regarded Ranown Cycle of films that were directed by Budd Boetticher, produced by Harry Joe Brown, and starring Randolph Scott. It's based on the 1955 story " The Captives" by Elmore Leonard, one of my favorite writers whose work continues to be adapted for film and television ( 3:10 to Yuma, Jackie Brown, Out of Sight , Justified , etc). It's also a study in economy, with every line of dialogue and every scene in service of the whole. There is no fat on this lean--and often mean--B-picture from Columbia.  The picture is essentially a hostage story that unfolds almost in real time. Randolph Scott plays Pat Brennan, a kind-hearted loner who lives a solitary life in the hills. When we first meet him, he's visiting a stagecoach way station in the middle of the desert on his way into town. His friendly interactions with the attendant and his young son inform us...

Review: Frankie Ford - Sea Cruise: The Complete Releases 1958-62

Image
If you only know Frankie Ford's biggest hit: "Sea Cruise," you're forgiven. Between 1958 and 1960, the New Orleans rocker released a string of singles: "Alimony," "Seventeen," and a version of "You Talk Too Much" are all worth a listen. However, oo-wee, baby, it's "Sea Cruise" that stands as Frankie Ford's legacy. SEA CRUISE: THE COMPLETE RELEASES - 1958-62 gives a near-complete overview of the swamp pop/New Orleans R&B artist's original and most vital career period.  Numerous gems are uncovered, such as "Morgus the Magnificent" which is an ode to a local horror host that he recorded with Malcolm Rebennack Jr., aka Dr. John: "we don't go out to roll and rock, we get our kicks from the house of shock." Also worth seeking out is the provocative (especially for its era) "It Must Be Jelly ('Cause Jam Don't Shake Like That"). Not all the songs are piano-bashing rockers: when ...

Review: The Desert Hawk (1950)

Image
Arriving during the heyday of Universal's exotic adventure film oeuvre, The Desert Hawk stars Yvonne De Carlo, who takes top billing over Richard Greene, the titular Desert Hawk--a Robin Hood of the Middle Eastern sands. It's a testament to the sheer star power of Ms. De Carlo, who was one of the most bankable stars at the studio and who gone from an uncredited player to the first name on the marquee in only four short years. The Desert Hawk  was released just a few months after Buccaneer's Girl, which had followed closely on the heels of The Gal Who Took The West , and...well, you get the idea.  These desert adventure films were a dime a dozen during the 1940s and into the 1950s. They often follow a particular, well-proven formula involving an outlaw or some royal figure in disguise who must overthrow corruption with the help of a plucky band of rebels. They're full of swashbuckling sword fights, romance, and light comedy. Generally, they follow the pattern laid out in...
